My New Theory On Personality Psychology
Have you ever felt boxed in by your MBTI type? What if we could use the brilliant insights of Carl Jung without the rigid labels that can create a fixed mindset?
In this video, I explore a different way of looking at personality. For years, I used and talked about personality types, but today, I feel we need to move beyond them. Carl Jung himself wasn’t focused on categorizing people; he wanted to give us a language to understand our inner worlds. So, how can we use his concepts in a healthier, more holistic way?
I propose we reframe the eight personality functions as universal human needs that we all share. Instead of being one thing or the other, we can embrace all of them.
In this discussion, I break down what this looks like:
Introversion as the need for Autonomy
Extroversion as the need for Connection
Intuition (N) as the need for Creativity
Sensing (S) as the need for real Experience
Feeling (F) as the need for Meaning
Thinking (T) as the need for Learning
Judging (J) as the need for Goals
Perceiving (P) as the need for Play
The problem arises when we create an internal conflict, prioritizing one need so much that we neglect its opposite. This is where the idea of a “dominant” and “inferior” function often comes fromโit’s a self-imposed limitation, often rooted in past worries or traumas.
The goal is to find psychic harmony and flow, allowing these needs to work together. You can be playful while pursuing your goals. You can be creative while staying grounded in reality. Let’s stop setting ourselves up for half a life because of a four-letter code and start embracing our whole, complete selves.
I’d love to hear what you think. Does this resonate with you? Do you feel limited by your type? Let’s talk about it in the comments below.
Thank you for watching!
