How did I build my personality tests?

I have learnt many things over the years when it comes to building successful personality tests.

First, questions should be short and succinct. Longer questions perform worse and have more room for reinterpretation.

Avoid putting multiple statements in one question, for example, I like milk and honey is a bad question because some people might like milk and some might like honey.

A good question is a question that is easy and quick to understand and answer in a clear way with either a strongly agree or strongly disagree.

I test the performance of all my questions and questions where results often fall in the middle are removed and replaced with more clear questions.

Secondly, questions should be true in all situations. For example, a question like, I am outgoing is most likely not going to perform well, because most people have situations where they are more outgoing, and some situations where they may be more shy. Your users will end up getting different results every time they respond.

How can you write a question that is true in all situations?

Focus on values-oriented questions, like, I enjoy being outgoing. Values tend to be more firm and clear and represent how we want to act and what we believe is the right way to act regardless of our mood or situation. Our behaviour can change, but our values tend to remain more consistent.

Thirdly, questions should not be biased. Questions like “I seek success” or “I am happy” are clearly biased questions and results will skew in this direction. Understand that people will want to get the best result possible and will choose the result they feel is superior. On the other hand, turbulent or more negative/self-critical people will say no on these questions but not for the right reasons.

Neutral questions are questions that are neither positive or negative. I enjoy working on long-term goals is a question that simply suggests a direction. I enjoy working in a free-flow manner, is a similar question in a different direction. Neither suggests that one is better than the other.
