What values are instrumental to your happiness, but not directly?

Some values are less important to us than others. These values are still important, but they are more important as instruments or tools. For example, a person who regards freedom very highly, may still value security, in so far that that security does not come at the expense of their freedom.

In fact, they may value security because it helps protect their freedom, for example, having a social security net, may make you feel more free to take risks and to explore business opportunities and possibilities, than not having a security net. That means security is an instrumental value to freedom-lovers.

To focus on instrumental values can put you in an autopilot state, where you have no energy or time to focus on what you really want, and where you instead have to constantly apply yourself in outside areas, even though these may have a negative effect on your energy or motivation.
