The Enneagram 9 Explained

As a Peacemaker, you have the goal of harmony. To be in harmony means to be fully content. You want to be at peace with yourself and the world. Often, conflict is a big stressor for you, and so you work hard to keep the balance in your life and in your relationships.

The Enneagram 9 wing 1 fears criticism and works to keep other people happy. The Enneagram 9 wing 8 seeks to avoid stress and heavy demands and seeks an easy life. The healthy part of a Peacemaker is that at your best, you are a relaxing, easygoing person. People feel safe and at ease around you. But when unhealthy, this type will often avoid necessary conflict. You may struggle to set boundaries. You are too eager to agree and compromise with other people, that you can easily become used by other people.

Perhaps growing up, you felt that you were always second place to everyone else. Often, the Peacemaker fears that they are redundant or useless to other people. If they speak out for themselves, they worry that they will be disconnected from other people. For you, compromise has become a survival mechanism in order to fit in and to avoid the anger of the group.

Enneagram 9 wing 1

As an Enneagram 9 wing 1, you work hard to stand above criticism. It is important for you to keep other people happy and so you work to please the people around you. You may be sensitive to feedback and you often think that other people are angry or displeased with you.

Fearing that other people are upset with you, you work to make amends by taking care of any chores or tasks that will bring back the peace. It is common for this type to become highly cautious. You may avoid to take on work or to take action because you worry that other people will disagree with you or question your results. This will cause other people to see you as lazy or avoidant. But it’s not that you don’t want to do things, it’s that you want to do them the right way. You may worry too much about the results or fear failure.

Enneagram 9 wing 8

The Enneagram 9 wing 8 is different from the 9 wing 1 in that they are more focused on the external than the internal. You are often perceived as a bit chaotic, as you try to meet everyone’s expectations. You are often overburdened as you try to work an entire group project on your own. Quick to say yes, you take on responsibility easily. You want to please everyone, but that is often impossible.

Being a bit all over the place, people will question you on unfinished or rushed work. Some will see you as irresponsible or unreliable, as they know you have a tendency to agree with them, but in the end, do something completely different. It’s not intentional. You try your best, and your intentions are good. You just need to learn to be more realistic about your time and become better at prioritising.
