Are INFPs better than INFJs?

My name is Erik Thor, and my goal is to use personality psychology to help people actualize into their best version of themselves. If you enjoyed this article, consider becoming a patron. Thanks so much for reading and sharing my ideas!

INFPs typically score high in modesty. That's why they would never think about this. Their gut reaction would be, no, everyone is good at something, still, I thought I'd write this article. Not to take away from the many good things about INFJs. I wrote this only to showcase some of the strengths of the INFP personality type.

INFP vs INFJ - A quick comparison

INFP Strengths

IJ vs IP

The IP in the INFP translates to a higher individualism and more personal thinking. The INFP will more readily consider their own feelings and values where the INFJ is more likely to be focused on the tribes feelings first.

This means the INFP tends to have a more personal values system, and a more quirky character. In a group situation. The INFPs have deep values and convictions that they sometimes find difficult to share with others. The INFJ is more likely to mirror the beliefs of others and to present the group with a compromise they believe will bring harmony to the group. INFJs consider their own ideas and vision, but present a compromise based on the group's needs. INFPs are therefore sometimes misunderstood as more selfish and less group-oriented, but the positive of that is that they are less likely to compromise their personality just to fit in.

Np vs Nj

As an iNtuitive Perceiving type, you are going to have more color and diversity in your thinking. Your imagination is going to be more open and you are going to consider and play with more factors. You are going to have more fun when thinking. Your intuition is more recreative in its nature than the INFJs.

What the INFJ is going to eliminate or ignore because it's "impropable" you will still consider as perfectly possible. This means you are, while more likely to get sidetracked, less likely to be caught off guard. This is also the trait that makes INFPs the better listeners of the two types. The INFJ narrows down options to find the most likely course of action. The INFP expands to see more and more perspectives.

The INFJ is less likely to hear you if you say something if it is not something they are interested in hearing. The INFP is going to have plenty of associations to everything you say. They will show more initial curiosity to hear your ideas. Some of those associations can sound random, but that just adds to their humor and surprise.

Fp vs Fj

INFPs score much higher on honesty and authenticity than the INFJ personality type. More likely to speak your mind and share your own feelings, even when they disagree with or hurt the feelings of others. INFJs value truth and honesty highly, too, but sometimes make a habit of being too accomodating of others. This can vary with personal development and experiences, though.

You will be real with people and will share problems you have with another person. Even if it might cause conflict. Being able to have an argument with another person if you feel it is right is important. It means you are more able to make a difference in the world.

If you'd simply turn your cheek every time, always adjusting to the tribe, you'd soon become a pushover, and INFPs are no pushovers. Sometimes they have to fight to get heard. They don't like it - it brings them stress - and they like peace just as much as any INFJ would, but when in touch with their inferior function, Extroverted Thinking, they'll speak out and go on a quest to fight for their moral convictions.

Just an FYI. INFJs can learn to be great in any of the areas INFPs are good at, too. Through vulnerability and facing your fears, you can improve yourself and become just as talented as the INFP personality type. The above INFP talents are not exclusive to the INFP. They are just areas where INFPs tend to have a head start over other personality types. And INFJs have many great strengths I just didn't have time to go into in this article.

Let me know if you want to see a comparison with other types, too!

  1. This seems very incorrect. As an INFJ. these are wrong. we are very creative and we sense what is right and what is wrong. we are good listeners we just do not know how to respond. please fix this!

  2. I as an infj are verry creative on my perspective and that we are just afraid to say it out in public usually on my opinion and my best friend is an infp and we both can generate a lot of ideas wich are verry separate to we just have opposite mind sets usually

  3. Wow, this is probably the worst article on the web.
INFP's are very creative, yes, but creative in a non practical way.
INFJ's are Very creative but more creative in a practical way. Creative in useful ways.
Terrible article. Makes me blacklist this whole site.

  4. Great article! Some infjs are really butthurt here. I've always been the envy of INFJs no kidding because of my free and strong personality. At the same time I admire INFJs pragmatism as they get the job done better than INFPs.

  5. I don’t mind warranted criticism, but this is just blatantly wrong and not constructive at all. There are stark differences between INFPs and INFJs, however, every single point you made was a trait that they both share, yet you acted like they were extremely different in those aspects. No one personality type is better than another. The whole point of MBTI is to understand yourself and others better.

  6. Infps will surely like this article though it's not accurate. The biggest truth, mbti isn't wholly accurate. Judging people by mbti personality types is just next to stupidity. And, showing one mbti better than the other is the biggest stupidity ever. Everyone thinks that intjs are only logical but I have met the creative ones too. So, we can conclude that everyone is creative in their own way. I ought to disagree.

  7. This is a lie the whole thing is about how infp is better but it is not true infj is more vise and much smarter. Firstly INFJ is much more smarter, stronger, viser and creative. Please stop shearing the fake information. This information is probably by some pick me infp who thinks really highly of theirselves and not sorry because you are lier and disrespect so many people. And most of the time you can see that they are only taking about how good infp is well that is a big lie. Stop shearing this misinformation. If you are jealous deal with it by yourself.

  8. (1/5)

This article is highly biased, which is fine, because the author starts off basically saying that he wanted to take a moment to uplift the INFP..I salute your efforts with that. However, the problem is that you had to unscrew INFJ's to make it appear that the INFP shines better. You intentionally compared the two and said negative things about all of INFJ's functions so that you could make the INFP sound superior. So I will keep my personal opinion out of this about if I think one is better or not... But just know.. I don't have to break my neighbor's kneecaps to prove to the world that I have good knees.
